Say what you want about Werner Herzog, but the man asks some interesting questions. He has a way of finding mystery hidden in plain sight, and gleaning insights from the most everyday banalities, which is what I’ve enjoyed about his recent documentaries.
For instance, he famously asks in “Encounters At the End of the World” why, if simple species are able to coerce other animals into doing labor for them, why don’t more complex animals with more brain power do the same? He posed the question with this unforgettable image asking why a monkey has never ridden a goat off into the sunset, and it’s become a classic in the Herzog canon:
So imagine my surprise getting hat-tipped to the Animals Riding Animals Tumblr and seeing this:
Monkey riding a goat! Quite adeptly I might add—look at the balance being achieved.
It’s a sad day—one of Herzog’s ponderous wonderments has been reduced to just another fact of life turned up on the internet.
